INTERIOR MAKEOVER 2024
Weißensee, Berlin
WHO IS IT FOR? AND WHAT WERE THE FIRST IMPRESSIONS?
This bedroom is located inside an old building in Berlin-Weißensee. The room will be shared by an adult and two young children and needs to offer enough storage space for clothes, belongings, and toys. It is important that it contains a desk for the children to do their homework and other activities.
At first impression, the room appeared to be very narrow and long. The wooden floor had many layers of paint with grey color on top. The ceiling is high, typical from old buildings.

OPTIMIZING FUNCTIONALITY AND FLOW WITHIN A COMPACT SPACE
This project included a complete bedroom solution, involving carpentry and interior design work.
Since the room was small, it made sense to take advantage of the ceiling's height to create extra space. The walls were thick structural brick walls, which could carry some weight. In order to save floor space, I decided that the structure shouldn't be carried by columns but by the thick walls instead. With the help of a structural engineer, the wood beams dimensions were decided and loft bed was constructed without columns and visually clean.

For better sleep quality and privacy reasons, I decided to split the adult's from the children's sleeping areas. Since children are smaller and would only sleep there every other week, it made sense to use the loft bed as their sleeping area.
Instead of building a ladder to access the loft bed, I decided to combine different heights of cabinets as both stairs and wardrobe/storage. Furthermore, a door from the same wardrobe was fixed on one of the higher steps of the stairs to serve as a safety feature and prevent the children from falling, just as the white square-shaped cabinets on the edge of the structure, used for both safety and extra storage.

Both the bed and the wardrobes are from the same furniture series and the same materials to create a cohesive style. Under the bed, there are drawers on the window side, to provide extra storage space, and shelves on the other side to create more sense of depth.
The modular open shelving system features two desks, two cabinets, and numerous built-in shelves. The height of each element can be adjusted, allowing the furniture to adapt to the children's growth.
Both the wardrobe and the shelving unit are shallow, making the narrow bedroom appear wider. The result is a calming, clean and functional space with clear structure.
