Baby Crib

Wood, Polypropylene Rope

136x66x86cm

REDESIGNING A CLASSIC

The main goal of Olga's baby crib design was to fit into a young, stylish modern home decor. Most baby cribs use vertical wooden bars to secure the baby. For Olga's baby crib, I decided to use a different kind of element, one that resembles a common material seen on playground equipment, the rope. I studied the regulation standards concerning infant's furniture, so that I would choose the right distance between the rope sections to avoid the baby's head or limbs to get stuck between them.

I decided to go for 2 different types of reclaimed wood to create an interesting contrast between the legs and the rest. The rope is made of polypropylene, a material that is smooth and easy to clean.

When the baby starts to grow and can already seat, parents can lower the mattress' base by releasing the carabiner hooks on the side.

UNEXPECTED FEEDBACK

By having the cord crossing in both vertical and horizontal direction, the babies were able to have 2 types of grip, when they were getting old enough to lift their own bodies to sit or stand. Parents said that having 2 types of grip helped the babies accomplish these tasks easier.

*The prototype piece used rope, instead of the carabiner to hold the mattress in place.
